Things To Do,
Places To See

Southport is in Tasmania's Far South, between the World Heritage Southwest National park and the D'Entrecasteaux Channel.

Nearby are the Hastings Caves (15 minutes drive, hourly tours) and Thermal Springs where you can swim in a pool of warm (not hot) spring water in the rainforest. Otherwise fossicking for gem-stones, birdwatching walking along beaches, forest, and mountains or relaxing, wine tasting and sightseeing are the main activities.

For more detailed information on walks and other things to do check out the Far South Tasmania website.

Our house has big verandas and lounges for relaxing in, a barbeque area and a canoe for guests to use to explore the bay.

Southport has several beautiful beaches and a pub providing good country pub food and well priced local and interstate wines.

Dover (20 km away) has a couple of take-away cafes, Tasmania's most southern vineyard (with a terrific European style PInot) a basic supermarket, an excellent grill/pizza restaurant and an RSL serving well-priced meals with a million-dollar view.

Geeveston (40 km away) has a couple of Galleries and restaurants and is the turn off for the Tahune Airwalk as well as the Hartz Mountains National Park which is has spectacular views and a range of walks from 20 minutes return to 5 hours.

There are plenty of drives and pretty places to look at, as well as the French Historical sites at Recherche Bay (about 40 minutes drive) wineries, restaurants etc. between us and Hobart ( i.e. within 1 1/2 hours )

When The Weather's Not So Fine...

To be honest, it isn't always sunny in the Far South, but even when its rainy there's plenty to do. When you are in a cave the weather doesn't matter at all, the springs are the same temperature all year round and just as wet, and afterwards in winter there are lovely open fires in the spectacular stone picnic shelter. Pinot tastes even better in a wonderful wood gallery with warm southern hospitality. Fossicking after rain is especially rewarding as is viewing the Adamson's Falls (medium grade, 3 hours return). And with the right clothes and a warm fire to come home to, there is nothing to stop you having a great day any day!
